Faculty of Engineering, Udayana University Holds International Community Service on Black Soldier Flies BSF Farming

The Faculty of Engineering, Udayana University held an international community service with the theme "Introduction of Best Practice in Black Soldier Flies (BSF) Farming Developed at University of Hawaii" which took place at Magi-Farm, Batubulan, Gianyar, Bali. This activity presented a renowned practitioner from the University of Hawaii Manoa, USA, namely Tavish McIntyre McGreevy, who shared his knowledge and experience regarding BSF cultivation.

This community service program aims to train participants in developing small-scale Black Soldier Flies (BSF) cultivation in order to maintain environmental balance. A small scale was chosen because large-scale cultivation practices have the potential to disrupt the ecosystem if not closely monitored. Through this training, participants were taught about a mini system designed to attract BSF flies naturally. The larvae produced then automatically exit the system and become feed for livestock, such as poultry and fish, which are waiting around the system. This approach is able to reduce costs and ensure that the balance of the ecosystem is maintained.

This event was led by Prof. Tjokorda Gde Tirta Nindhia from the Mechanical Engineering Study Program, who emphasized the importance of adopting environmentally friendly technology in the agricultural sector. In addition to training, this community service also resulted in several cooperation agreements for the development of BSF Farming in the future.

With the presence of practitioners from the University of Hawaii, the Faculty of Engineering, Udayana University hopes that this community service will encourage the adoption of sustainable BSF Farming techniques in Bali and support increased awareness of the importance of environmental balance in livestock farming.
