Udayana University and Tsinghua University Strengthen International Collaboration through the Conference on Sustainable Design and Research in Asian Cultural Spaces

The Architecture Study Program at the Faculty of Engineering, Udayana University, in collaboration with the School of Architecture at Tsinghua University (China) and various academic and professional partners, hosted the "Sustainable Design and Research in Asian Cultural Spaces" International Conference in Bali on August 31, 2026. This event served as an international forum bringing together academics, architects, researchers, practitioners, and students to discuss issues regarding sustainable design, architectural education, research, and the development of Asian cultural spaces. The event opened with welcoming remarks from Udayana University—represented by the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, Prof. Ir. Linawati, M.Eng., Sc., Ph.D.—as well as representatives from partner institutions and TSEA. The morning agenda included an opening keynote speech, a main session, a group photo opportunity, and a keynote session featuring prominent figures and architectural academics from various countries. The main session took place in the Awan Auditorium, featuring speakers Cui Kai (China), Hoàng Thúc Hào (Vietnam), Tweeite Vajrabhaya (Thailand), Antonius Richard Rusli (Indonesia), and Prof. Song Yehao (Tsinghua).

Udayana University played an active role, with its academics serving as chairs and speakers in several sessions, including "Design Education and Localized Teaching," "Local Culture & Sustainable Spaces," and "Green Construction & Low-Carbon Technologies." These forums addressed context-based architectural education, the relationship between culture and spatial sustainability, and innovations in green construction and low-carbon technologies. Speakers included Tri Anggraini Prajnawrdhi, Ph.D., and Antonius Karel Muktiwibowo, Ph.D., from Udayana University, alongside Charles Dewanto (Indonesia), Prof. Huang Weixin (Tsinghua University), and Prof. I Nyoman Suprapta Winaya (Udayana University). Subsequent sessions featured Prof. Zhu Ning (Tsinghua University), Febe Liana (Garis Bangun Indonesia), Dr. I Putu Oka Swiranatha (Bali Cultural Heritage Conservation Agency/PTACBI), Prof. Liu Heng (China Architecture Design & Research Group), and Arya Abieta (Wastu Adi Olahrupa).

The event demonstrated that the conference served not merely as a platform for keynote speakers to present their ideas, but also as an opportunity for young academics and students to showcase their own thinking and work. Hosting the International Conference on Sustainable Design and Research in Asian Cultural Spaces in Bali marked a significant milestone for Udayana University in strengthening its international standing and networks within the fields of architecture, sustainable design, and cultural space research. Collaborations with Tsinghua University, as well as other institutions and professional organizations, are expected to pave the way for broader cooperation in education, research, technological development, cultural preservation, and architectural practice.
