Udayana University's Faculty of Engineering Develops Electric Vehicle Battery Cooling System

The Faculty of Engineering at Udayana University continues to foster technological innovations that support the adoption of electric vehicles. One such research initiative focuses on a Battery Thermal Management System (BTMS) designed to regulate battery temperatures in electric vehicles, including both cars and motorcycles.


This research is driven by the critical need to control the temperature of lithium-ion batteries, which are widely used in electric vehicles. Excessive temperatures can adversely affect battery performance, safety, efficiency, and lifespan.


The development process utilizes a paraffin-based Phase Change Material (PCM) combined with expanded graphite and Aluminum Nitride (AlN). These materials serve to absorb and conduct the heat generated by the battery during operation.


PCMs function through a phase-change process upon absorbing heat. This mechanism allows the heat generated by the battery to be absorbed, thereby controlling temperature rise. This approach offers a potential alternative for passive cooling systems that are simpler and more energy-efficient.


The study also examines the use of heat pipes to facilitate heat transfer. Testing was conducted under various load conditions—including cyclic loading, which simulates the fluctuating loads experienced during electric vehicle operation—to evaluate the material's ability to regulate battery temperature.


Test results indicate that the PCM composite effectively mitigates the rise in battery temperature compared to conditions without cooling materials. The research also incorporates numerical modeling to predict the battery's thermal behavior under various conditions.


This technological development aims to facilitate the creation of battery cooling systems that are more effective, safe, and efficient. Furthermore, the research findings hold potential for application across various types of electric vehicles.


Through this research, the Faculty of Engineering at Udayana University continues to strengthen its contribution to the development of research and technological innovations that support the transition toward sustainable transportation in Indonesia.
